Low energy
I saw Beginnings - A Tribute To Chicago on Broadway in the '80s originally. The performance at the Fox on Thursday night left me disappointed. The vignettes and dancing were uninspired and low-energy. The singing was often too quiet even for those of us in the orchestra section to understand. The highlights were Grizzabella, Gus, Deuteronomy, and the overly-cheesy Rum Tum Tugger. The director seemed responsible for the flatness of the show to me. The actors could project their voices and personalities at times, but it felt like the director had instructed them all to tone everything down. If the original Broadway cast had been this lackluster, the show wouldn't have had the staying power it did. The overall production felt more like a dress rehearsal than a performance. Unfortunately, I think I would not recommend it.
